Chris Pine: Im usually barefoot & not wearing anything at my house anyway
Chris Pine has two films out this summer, Star Trek Beyond (out this month) and Hell or High Water (out in August). So we’re probably going to be seeing more of him in the coming month or so. And that might be a problem for me! I like Chris Pine, I find him attractive and sexy and I think he’s an underrated actor. But in interviews, I’m just reminded of the fact that he often seems like just another frat-boy bro. Let’s see how this plays out! Pine has a new interview with the Sunday Telegraph (the Aussie publication) and there were some interesting quotes in here. I think he’s trying out a new “Brad Pitt Lite” personality? Some highlights:
Whether he was wild in his 20s: “No, I was probably the exact opposite! My delayed pubescence is coming up. I don’t feel bad at all.”
His true passion: “I love design. I’m really into interior design and architecture and furniture. If I had any patience whatsoever for furniture making, I’d probably get into that. But I don’t. I do love creating spaces, though. Having bought a home five or six years ago now, and working on it constantly, there is a great joy for me in working on a canvas that big; its sole effect being to look good and make you feel good.
Coming from a family of actors: “My work ethic was instilled in me by my parents, for sure. They wanted good grades [from me] and I was generally an obedient kid. They were lucky in that regard. But also, by process of osmosis, by being in a family of actors who would come home and talk about their day’s work, and then witnessing the ebbs and flows of the business that is by nature fickle; I learnt a lot about the rosy times, the dead rosy times, the good times, the bad times, the flush times, the bankrupt times. What my dad did to put food on the table and put me through school was not romantic. So I didn’t have a romantic vision of acting growing up at all. In fact, I never wanted to do it – and only found it later on.
Whether he’s a workaholic: “I’m really good at taking breaks! I’m probably much better at taking breaks than I am at doing anything else, although some sort of fire has recently been lit. But “workaholic” suggests you work to avoid something else, and that is not how I view it. I work to get more involved in learning about myself, about how I work with others, and about my relationships. What I do for a living, thankfully, is some sort of giant catharsis. And it allows you, if done insightfully, to be more present in daily life.”
Whether he thinks about becoming a parent: “Yeah, sure, I guess at some point. I’m really happy to be working right now and I get a lot of support and love from my family and friends. So I’m good for now.”
His personal style: “I almost have a very visual OCD. Just like I love interior design, I love clothes and really get into the structure and the craftsmanship of them. In California, fashion tends to be very casual – probably because everybody is stuck in their cars and no one cares. It’d be nice if people spent some time trying to look good. I do the same thing, though – put on some jeans, Havaianas and a T-shirt, and I’m done. I do like to get back to the 1950s basics of a good T-shirt and jeans. I’m usually barefoot and not wearing anything at my house anyway…
His quotes about starting a family remind me that single men are getting those questions too, just like single women. But a single woman at 35 would probably get some follow-up questions about her seeming ambivalence about starting a family, where Pine just gets to say “nah, I’m not feeling it right now” and that’s the end. Also: I bet he does walk around his house naked. I can never do that, even though I live alone! The best I can do is walk around in underwear and a t-shirt.
